THE DARK SIDE OF HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 1

You just want it to succeed. In a city where venues for ‘live’ music are few and far between and a city painfully in the dark about knowing good music from bad and the difference between genres and pitch from patch, there’s the unpretentiousness of Morrison Cafe and it’s Tuesday open mic sessions.

Free your head thinking you’re going to hear the next Dylan or anything approaching creativity. But where there’s hope and passion and people not trying to steal the thunder and sail on the showboat, there’s a future.

Morrison Cafe is three doors down from The Wanch when it comes to acts almost ready for prime time. But sitting there on a Tuesday, it becomes obvious who’s heading where and others who simply want to play for the fun of it.

There’s a looseness to it all that’s a refreshing change from listening to a very good covers band making all the right noises and guitarists striking all the right poses. The key is not to get bamboozled by all that rock and poses and think these musicians are going anywhere. Copycat musicians just go from one rinky dink gig to another and have their egos stroked by drunks, usually on the mature side of old and with a very limited musical vocabulary. Steppenwolf, anyone?

It’s not unlike the F&B manager who’s sold the same old lounge acts thinking that these people are performing jazz. When will they learn? And why must it always have to be some mutant ninja turtles version of what’s passed off as “jazz” and a repertoire sung by some over the hill songstress in a sequinned dress and mentioning her popularity on social media?

Nah, give me Morrison Cafe and its Open Mic sessions where everyone is welcome, where the owner Aneesh/Anish who’s not Dinesh doesn’t think he’s Bill Graham and is simply happy to see his venue full with unpretentious people and with some rough diamonds in the mix who you just know are heading for bigger things. And I don’t mean the Morrison Cafe Veggie Burger, recently judged to be the best in town and which I have yet to Supersize Me.
